June 8, 2006

Meeting called to order at 7:35 PM by Bob Pollock, President, at the Holy Cross Church.

Dick presented the treasurers report; currently the club has $2,894.41 in checking and $6,631.90 in savings. This includes proceeds from the plant sale. Approximately $1,000 is owed for plant sale expenses. The plant sale resulted in 5 new memberships and $4,826.88 earned in plant sales.

LaNell thanks all who helped with the sale workshop, sale and purchasing. Thanks go too to LaNell for another job well done!

Ron thanks folks for early membership renewal. Membership cards will be sent out with the next newsletter. He further mentioned that Suzy contributed and assisted very generously to the plant sale. Many thanks to Suzy.

Joe Gagnon encouraged folks to sign up now for the tour to both show their ponds and assist with the tour.

Betty Lou presented the new 4 gallon pots at just $4 each.

Bob introduced the guest speaker: Bob Winkler of Colorado Springs, Koi advocate, Koi Show Judge and Koi Addict.

Bob Winkler spoke on the topic of Quarantine Tanks and the need for quarantine of new fish.
Some key points:
Why bother? It is easier to spot a sick fish, easier to heal in a smaller heated environment, protects from the spread of disease.
Tanks should have:
Good filter and aeration
Top
Light
Bio-security (no cross contamination with tools)
Heat
Bigger is better
a 6’ show tank can work well
Trickle filter
A rapidly maturing bio filtration method, however it does not remove solids.
New Filters
Take roughly 3-6 weeks to be established
Established water and filter material speed the process
Direct Sunlight
Not the best choice due to difficulty in managing temperature, Koi sunburn, too hot
Quarantine fish 4 weeks to 3 months

Q & A:
Medicated food? Not recommended, too hard to maintain quality
Koi Herpes
Most active at 72-76 degrees
Indicated by very affected, ill fish with rapid death
Easy to misdiagnose
It has occurred in C.S.
Exposure comes from a variety of sites throughout the U.S.
Needs a host to transmit, birds can transmit
If pond is contaminated, entire pond is lost and must be sterilized with chlorine, including filters.
Heron deterrent?
Fishing line strung over ponds
Decoys (limited success)
Plan pond with steep vertical sides
